About
Luke 1:38
“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.’”
Hi, I’m Zoë. I am a photographer, a lover of life, an optimist, and an extrovert. When I was 18, I began life as a freshman in college at the University of Denver. I incidentally signed up for a photography class with my now mentor and role model, Roddy MacInness. As I was sitting in my chair, unaware of what would become of my life, I felt peace in this classroom where photos surrounded me. It was my second class with Roddy when he asked me something I will never, ever forget.
“Zoë, what are you passionate about? Passionate. What brings a fire to your soul?”
It hit me, in that moment, I had never even pondered this question. I’m not sure if I really even knew what passion was. As I thought more deeply about this, I found my passion. It was to love people well. Very well. I didn’t (don’t) care what capacity it was in, I just wanted to pour myself out to the people around me. Roddy inspired me to pick up my camera and learn through passion. Not through technicalities or inherent skill, simply through passion. As I began to do this, I realized that I loved through my lens.
My soul lights on fire each time I close the shutter on my camera. Every fiber of my being feels inspired when I sit in front of a couple who just recently got engaged; when I see the light hit the face of a newborn perfectly; when I get to capture the very moment someone says yes to their soulmate forever.
“Fiat Photo” emerged from my desire to give God my yes. It is based off of Mary’s yes in Luke 1:38. Mary’s faith, expressed in her fiat, is neither a simple acceptance nor a resignation before God’s will. Rather, ‘let it be done unto me’ expresses a joyful desire to collaborate with whatever God has determined, even without fully understanding what this will means.
Photography is my yes. It is my calling. It is what brings a fire to my soul.
